On September 16th, 2019, The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1068 in South Jersey hosted its Fifth Annual Doc Jensen Memorial Golf Outing, which provides college scholarships for children of Vietnam Veterans. Thanks to Phil Cannella and Crash Proof Retirement’s fifth straight year of support, this year’s tournament had its largest turnout to date.
Vice President of VVA 1068, George Weiss, said:
“This is our biggest fundraiser, the golf tournament. If it wasn’t for Phil Cannella and Joann Small’s backing here in this tournament, I’m not sure we’d still be doing it. I’m not sure we’d still be successful. The main reason Crash Proof Retirement has been a great help for us is what they believe in. They believe in helping people the same way that we do. We’re on the same wavelength in terms of how we try and help.”
Captain Andrew Doc Jensen was a beloved and respected Navy Chaplain, who counseled thousands of veterans for over 30 years. His memory is honored through this annual scholarship fundraising tournament. For the past five years, Crash Proof Retirement has provided critical financial and personal support for this golf outing. And continues to be a Gold Sponsor of this event.
Director of VVA 1068, Bill Devereaux, said:
“The donations that Phil Cannella and Joann Small have provided are used in numerous different ways. They help pay for our fees here. They help pay for the dinners. They help pay for us to advertise. They’ve been a prime Gold Sponsor since their first day of involvement. This year we have more golfers than ever and of course thanks to Joann Small and Phil Cannella, we have an extra ten guys playing that wouldn’t have been able to play, so we really appreciate that.”
Founder of Crash Proof Retirement, Phil Cannella, addressed the outing’s attendees, saying:
“Thank you for allowing us to sponsor you guys because it gives us a chance to thank the veterans that never really got a chance to be thanked when they came back from Vietnam and we certainly do have all of you in our prayers and thank you so very much for allowing us really to sponsor you guys. Thank you.”
CEO of Crash Proof Retirement, Joann Small, addressed the crowd as well, saying:
“We’re all sitting here together, and you know what, we’re doing it the American way. We’re helping everyone. We’re helping each other get over the atrocities and the adversities that we share together. And do you know what that means? That means democracy, and that means freedom, and that’s what we can never forget, and that’s what we should be teaching the young people. That democracy and freedom go hand in hand in this country.”
President of VVA 1068, Paul Heck, said:
“This golf outing is very important because the money we raise goes to scholarships for our veterans and their families. I always say our real heroes, they don’t wear baseball hats, they don’t wear football helmets, and they don’t wear hockey pads. Our real heroes wear dog tags. That’s our real heroes in life. We continue the tradition of Doc, and we continue the tradition of helping people.”
